Rooted in Middle English circa the 13th century, kindelen meant to give birth. To produce something new from nothing. Over time, it merged with the Old Norse kynda, meaning “to light a fire,” and gave us the modern word kindle. To ignite. To arouse. To inspire. In veterinary and formal contexts, it still describes a cat giving birth, and a group of kittens is still called a kindle. (The cat was never random.)
Kindelen also has Dutch and Flemish roots, as a diminutive of kind, meaning “child.” And in its Irish form, Kindelan traces back to the Gaelic O Cinnfhaoláin, descendant of a little wolf.
